The Ficus elastica degrades formaldehyde from furniture and carpets and grows really well in room temperatures. If you care for it in the right way, it’s one of the most rewarding ornamental plants.

Formal name: Ficus elastica

Nicknames: the rubber fig, rubber bush, rubber tree, rubber plant.

Family: Fig (Ficus)

Native habitat: Eastern parts of south Asia and southeast Asia.

Difficulty level: easy-medium.

Light requirements: prefers bright light. This plant does not like shade or low light. It is often placed near a window or behind sheer curtains.

Watering: Consistent watering. We recommend a good watering during the growing season and less watering during the winter.

Soil: A well-draining and well-aerated potting soil is needed. 1 part peat, 1 part pine bark and 1 part coarse sand (or perlite) is a good mix.

Temperature: standard room temperature. 60-85°F (15-28°C).
